PLC convened 72 elementary school teachers for a professional development session on instructional strategies designed to improve children’s vocabulary and reading comprehension skills. The all day session was facilitated by Dr. Ed Kame`enui, one of the nation’s leading researchers on reading and instructional strategies and support systems. He presented on key concepts and strategies expounded in the book, Vocabulary Instruction: Research to Practice, 2nd Edition, which he co-edited. While serving as the former Director for the Center on Teaching and Learning, University of Oregon, Kame`enui co-authored more than a dozen college textbooks on topics related to teaching reading, curriculum design, and managing classroom behavior. He has published more than 130 research journal articles and book chapters. His areas of research and teaching include early literacy and language development, school-wide reading improvement, the design of high quality educational materials, learning disabilities, vocabulary development, and the architecture of instruction.
