September 17 marks Constitution Day, the anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution in 1787. This pivotal moment in history continues to shape our nation’s laws, rights, and civic life today.
In Today Is Constitution Day by Jeanne Allen, published on Forza… for Education, we are reminded that civic education is not simply a matter of history but a civic right and responsibility. The article highlights new tools such as the National Constitution Center’s online Constitution 101 course (developed in partnership with Khan Academy), which is designed to advance constitutional literacy among students, educators, and families.
PLC’s mission is to build and align a network of strategic partnerships that foster the development, implementation, and evaluation of innovative and evidence-based educational approaches that improve reading outcomes and expand life opportunities for children in Hawaiʻi and across the Pacific. This mission connects closely to the goals of Constitution Day and Citizenship Day. By improving literacy skills, cultivating critical thinking, providing expanded learning opportunities, and encouraging active civil citizenship, PLC works to ensure that children and youth become not only proficient readers but also informed participants in our democracy who understand both their rights and responsibilities.
We encourage educators, students, and community members to use Constitution Day as a springboard. Explore the Constitution 101 course, take part in discussions about federalism and individual rights, and reflect on how the founding principles of separation of powers, checks and balances, and the Bill of Rights continue to shape our daily lives. Additional resources that support this journey include:
- The Bill of Rights Institute – A hub of open resources that helps educators and students understand and practice the skills of citizenship.
- The Jack Miller Center – An organization that offers research, teaching resources, and gatherings such as its National Summit on Civic Education, equipping leaders and educators at every level to strengthen civic understanding.
By deepening civic knowledge and nurturing civic responsibility, PLC supports the next generation of engaged, informed, and patriotic citizens.
