As a means to help ensure that children and youth are actively engaged in reading at home, especially during school closures, PLC teamed with the HIDOE Library Media Services to plan and pilot the HIDOE’s first statewide #808Reads challenge. This large-scale initiative was preceded by statewide technical assistance training and social media campaign coordinated by PLC. The HIDOE is using Beanstack, an online commercial application that makes it easy for users to register, track reading, and gain data-driven insights. Although the challenge is statewide, each school library has its own individual website where students can track books read and time spent reading them. This summer, 147 schools and 62,259 students participated in the #808Reads challenge and accounted for 3 million minutes of reading.
