PLC partnered with the Hawaiʻi Department of Education (HIDOE), Office of Curriculum, Instruction and Student Support, School Library Services to give project school children and families, associated with 11 project sites, access to electronic books through OverDrive, Inc., which provides secure management, digital rights management and e-book download fulfillment services for libraries and schools. PLC serves schools that are among those with the highest percentages of economically-disadvantaged children. Research shows that summer reading setback has an enduring negative effect on student performance, particularly for disadvantaged children. PLC’s collaboration with HIDOE School Library Services gave the 11 project sites an OverDrive subscription that provides students and their families with all day access to e-books of varying genre. As part of their license with OverDrive Inc. and partnership with PLC, HIDOE Library Services staff provides school personnel at the 11 project sites with ongoing training and technical support on e-book access, instructional integration, and data monitoring.
