On September 24, 2015, PLC convened a professional development session at Pearl Country Club for 21 participants comprising teachers from seven elementary schools and higher education faculty from the University of Hawaii, College of Education and Chaminade University, Education Division. The all-day session featured Dr. Ruth Kaminski, author of the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS), which is one of the most frequently used kindergarten through Grade 3 screening and progress monitoring assessments in Hawaiʻi elementary schools. The session addressed research-based early literacy assessment for children (including pre-kindergarten) that measures alphabet knowledge, vocabulary and oral language, phonemic awareness, and listening comprehension. The strategies that Kaminski addressed focused on identifying essential pre-literacy and oral language skill deficits and targeting them for remediation.
