Click here to view PLC’s latest episode of Mo‘olelo in the Murals: Walls that Bridge Communities and Cultures. It’s part of a five-part documentary series produced by the Pacific Literacy Consortium (PLC). Each short documentary highlights the collaborative process between local artists, children, youth, and community stakeholders in co-creating murals. The murals culminate a three- to four-week process in which students participate in huaka‘i (educational excursions) to actively engage with people, places, and events that reflect their community and culture. Based on these field experiences, students create artistic renderings—poems, drawings, and paintings—which the artists incorporate into a large-scale sketch that is then transferred onto a wall. This process is guided by Todd Johnson, President of The Estria Foundation and a consultant for PLC. Each video delves into the symbolism, events, and people featured directly and indirectly in the murals.

The mural featured in this video was created through a partnership between PLC, Hale‘iwa Elementary School, and The Estria Foundation.
