From May to June 2023, PLC collaborated with renowned muralist, Kamea Hadar, to facilitate the school’s first Mo‘olelo in the Murals arts-integration project. During the three-week participatory process, Hadar engaged students in hands-on art workshops, discussion, and interactive forums to ensure that the final artwork embodied students’ collective voice, concepts, and vision.
PLC’s Mo‘olelo in the Murals is a literacy-infused culture- and art-based visual storytelling arts-integration initiative. PLC connects schools with local muralists who collaborate with students, teachers, and community leaders to create culturally-relevant art that raises awareness of environmental issues and educates youth about Native Hawaiian culture, language, and history. The two week literacy-infused process comprises cultural expeditions, daily journaling, oral presentations, and community service. At the end the process, participants unveil a large-scale mural co-created with local artists, family members, and other community stakeholders. To date, PLC has partnered with schools and local artists to install six large-scale mural on five public school campuses.
